Goodbyes

Hello all!

It is that time of the year when the school year is coming to an end and goodbyes are approaching as summer rolls around. As we exchange goodbyes with our friends, we make promises to keep in touch over the summer and look forward to reuniting in the fall. For me (I'm sure it's similar to a lot of you), goodbyes are always really hard. They're bittersweet, to say the least.

For me, goodbyes are one of those things that make my heart stop and I feel myself become sick. Maybe it's the planner in me that freaks out because this was not part of the plan, or it's my irrational fear of change (unless I am the one who starts it, of course), or maybe it's simply my anxiety. I don't know. Either way I always feel like someone punched me in the gut.

There are two types of goodbyes: the one who says it and the one who receives it. Neither position is fun...When the person says goodbye, it's because they need to do what's best for them. Not because they want to hurt someone they care about, but because they need to focus on them and make the best decision for them. And sometimes that sucks (okay, a lot of the time that sucks). When I do this, I usually feel selfish because I know that I'm really hurting someone (or a lot of people) I deeply care about. And I constantly need to remind myself that I need to do this for ME. The decision that I'm making and all of the goodbyes that I'll need to say, are because I need to be selfish and focus on me. (Easier said than done, trust me.)

On the other hand, there are the goodbyes that receive, which are equally hard. It's usually unexpected or you've known about it for a while and it literally eats you away. You try to figure out a solution to make the person stay or avoid the goodbye for as long as you can until you can't. When this happens for me, I try to justify it. I try to understand how or why someone is choosing this decision or why they want to say goodbye. I find myself struggling with accepting it and this sense that I did something that would make them want to leave. I know that's not the case, but it doesn't ease the pain.

Goodbyes are always the hardest when I don't know when I'll see someone next. And even then, if you tell me that we'll be reunited in one month, two months, three months, I still find myself panicking. There's a part of me that feels like that's too long of a time without seeing someone I deeply care about (I get EXTREMELY protective of people who I care about) and that in a weird sense, I'm turning my back on them.

I usually try to avoid goodbyes for as long as humanly possible (Don't do what I do, people. It's not nearly as beneficial as you think.). I know that the minute I accept that I am going to say goodbye or I am going to receive a goodbye, it makes it more real to me. It's at that moment that I learn that this part in my life is closing and that the path with someone I care so much about it splitting. And somehow, I need to be okay with it. (And because I'm me, I get overly emotional. So I usually start crying because that's what I do in those situations.)

It's also really hard to be happy for a person who you have to say goodbye to. The decision that they're making (the one that means you have to say goodbye) is one that you have to support. They're doing what's best for them and as upset, hurt, and angry as you are, you know that you have to be happy for them because this goodbye isn't easy on them either. They have to do what's right for them, even if that means saying goodbye.

And now as I mentally prepare myself to say goodbye to two of the most influential and supportive women who have walked with me for over a quarter of my life, I need to remind myself repeatedly that I now have to be supportive of their decisions and that these "goodbyes" are simply "see you soon."

Love,

Katie

I Choose Happy

Hello (imaginary) people of the internet world!

I hope that all of you are enjoying your Friday and have wonderful (or lazy or wonderfully lazy) plans for the weekend! I apologize for not posting for a while...The past couple weeks haven't been too awesome and I've been very focused on school that I've been struggling trying to find time for anything else. But! I'm here now and I am a mixture of emotions and ready to write a post that will knock your socks off! (Okay, probably not, but a girl can try!)

As I mentioned earlier, the past few weeks have been crazy stressful. With a month of school left, professors are piling on more work than before, lectures are lasting longer, the summer job hunt has begun, the days are getting nicer, and the motivation is lacking. Plus I've also been in a really negative mood the past few weeks that I haven't been able to shake off, so it wasn't helping.

I could feel myself losing control of my life as I got more stressed out and became overly sensitive and emotional. (Remember, friends, I'm already an emotional person. But the past few weeks, my emotions have been on steroids basically.) I was tense all of the time with knots in my stomach for unknown reasons and I couldn't shake off this uncharacteristic bad mood...

And as I would fall deeper into this negative attitude, I realized how much I don't like it, how much I don't like myself when I'm like that. I always try to make an effort to be happy, but I could feel that maybe my effort was slacking and wasn't as genuine as I hoped. I knew that I had two choices to make: 1) let this negative attitude get the better of me and ruin the final month of my freshman year or 2) take a step back, take a deep breath, realize how incredibly lucky and blessed I am, and dive right back into my life with a genuine smile and positive attitude. I'm still working on removing the bad attitude, but I'm making an effort to make sure that I am happy.

Because here's the things, friends, life is too short. (Yes, I am well aware that this is life advice coming from a 19 year old...But that's what I'm saying! It seems like yesterday it was September and I was banging my head against a wall as I counted down the days until the end of Spanish. And then I blinked and it's now April and I went from 1 month into my first year at college to 1 month from being done with my first year of college. Do you see what I'm saying?!) So we need to be happy (easier said than done, I know). It's understandable that you don't need to be happy 24/7, we all have bad days. But we need to try to make an effort to be happy and enjoy this wonderful and beautiful life.

Sometimes it's hard. Sometimes life is totally kicking your butt and happiness is the least of your worries, but there are always reasons to be happy. And even when you're not, find the reasons that put a smile on your face and bring back good memories. Think of positive thoughts or talk to a friend that will make ease your negative mood. Heck, even reach out to your favorite amateur blonde blogger! ;)

I can't express my point enough that your own personal happiness is one of the most important things in life. There are days that will be bad and days when you don't even want to think about it, but you need to find one single happy thing a day. It can even be dorky, like buying a new laundry bag! (No, I am not speaking on personal experiences...It was a sock bag.) Happiness is more than a choice, it's a lifestyle.

And now, after writing an entry that has surely knocked your socks off...I must go write 2 papers that I have been avoiding like the plague. (...Yay...) Anyway, that is all that I have for all of you lovely people. Have a fantastic weekend!

Love,

Katie

P.S. Oh! Here's some inspiration for all of those who need some encouragement!

Tough Thoughts

Hey guys,

Before we get into the heavy/sad focus of the post, I just wanted to say that tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of my blog and I wanted to thank you all for taking the time to read it! This blog has kind of turned into an advice, diy, reviews, journally blog, but I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it. So thanks for being with me this past year, it means a lot to me. :)

The main focus of this entry is about something that's a tough topic: suicide. Within the past 3 months, there have 2 suicides of people I know of. The first was earlier this December; the student was a senior at my college. I had met him once or twice before, but his death still shook the school. The most recent one happened on Sunday and he was a student that graduated high school with me. I didn't know the student personally, but we had a handful of interactions throughout K-12. Numerous of my classmates posted about experiencing their own shock and denial when they heard about the news. After going through 4 years of high school, there was no suicide. I thought that we had overcome it, I thought that we had beat it; I guess I thought that it wasn't a real threat anymore...I thought wrong.

None of this is easy. I can't wrap my head around it and I'm left in denial--and I didn't even know him. My heart aches when I think of the family and friends who are grieving and searching for answers. I want to reach out to them and tell them that it's OK, but I know that it's not. This isn't OK, this isn't fair, and this hurts.

I get so angry when people claim that suicide is a coward's way out. I do agree that in some situations it is, but when it happens under a circumstance like this, then I argue it isn't. I've always looked at suicide to be when a person cannot fight the demons any longer. They aren't strong enough to keep fighting and are feeling so helpless and alone. This doesn't make it any easier, though, and I'm not trying to justify suicide, but I want to help give perspective and explain my point of view.

But more than anything, I always wish I could have help them. Be another person to fight the demons and protect them, to help bear the burden and give them the strength needed to overcome them. I know firsthand what it's like to be fighting the demons, I know what it's like to beg to God every night not to wake up in the morning, I know what it's like to be surrounded in darkness, I know what it's like to debate whether or not you should jump in front of the moving car, I know what it's like to start letters to your family and friends as you try to explain to them why it happened, I know what it feels like.

I desperately want to help those who are fighting the demons and make it better. I want to remind them there is a light in the darkness. I want to give them the strength, but more than anything I want to hold them close and remind them that they are loved. This isn't something that you can make sense of. It hurts and it's OK to be angry; you're allowed to be upset.

That being said, if you're experiencing any suicidal thoughts or if you're fighting the demons, please reach out to someone. The national suicide hotline number is open 24/7 and they WILL help you. The website is right here and the phone number is 1.800.273.8255. Please contact them. Your life is worth living and there are people who love you. No matter what demons you are fighting or how weak you may feel or the darkness that you are experiencing, please know that it DOES get better. You CAN fight it. Please reach out to them. Please.

And please remember: you are loved.

Love,

Katie

Inspiration

Hey guys!

I'm so sorry for not posting sooner! Life's been pretty busy...And a little sucky. (Long story.)

I'm gonna keep this entry fairly short because I have a billion and nine things to do, but I really wanted to post some inspiration because I'm sure I'm not the only one that needs it. So here you are! Have a great rest of the week!

Love,

Katie

Just thinking

Hi friends!

How are all of you this fine Thursday? I hope that all of you are having a lovely day so far! My day, in case you are curious (which I'm assuming you are because you're reading this awesome blog), has been interesting. It's the second day of spring semester classes and it's weird to think that I've been at school for nearly 6 months. The classes this semester don't seem bad (knock on wood), but they look like a lot of work.

Anyway, this past weekend I had the opportunity to go home (which is always really nice). It's really nice to go back to a familiar life (I try to avoid saying "normal" or "old" because that makes me so sad. First off, my college life is my normal life now (which is bittersweet to think about) and second off, thinking that it is "old" makes me really, really sad). I love having the chance to go home and sleep in my own bed, see my family, see friends, eat non-Commons food (although our school food isn't bad, actually), and just be back home.

I've been thinking a lot about going to a school in a different state (granted it's only 4 hours away), especially when I go home. I do have friends that went to school in the state and only live about 20 minutes away, so they have the convenience to go home as they please. I'm not gonna lie: I'm a little envious of them and their ability to go home whenever they want. However, I also know that I wouldn't have some of the awesome memories or incredible friends if I lived close by and went home frequently.

There's a part of me that does wonder what it'd be like if I chose to go to my other dream school that I was debating to go to. But it's not a bad, it's simply out of curiosity. I wonder how different my college experience would be and if I would've found friends like the friends I have here. But, more importantly, I wonder if I would be happy. (Long story short, about two years ago I went through a rough few months where I wasn't happy and was in a very dark place. After that, I vowed to myself that I would always do my best to be happy and spread the happiness to others. So, I've begun to place my own happiness above most things because I fear that one day I will go back to that place. And I don't know if I will be able to overcome it. (Not that I'm worried that that'll happen in the following weeks or anything, but it's something that I worry about sometimes.)) SO! I wonder what it would be like if I went there instead.

(Like I just got off the phone with my aunt and when I talk to my family or see pictures of my dog and I really wish that I was able to go back home for a few minutes. And if I were back home (or nearby), I'd be able to see them often and it'd make me happy.)

But I don't regret coming here. Not at all, actually! I love it here and I love the school and I love the friends I've made and I'm so thankful for everything that's happened to me! I feel that I've grown so much while I've been here. I feel like an adult(ish).

I'm sorry if this is kind of ranting or babbling. (I'm sitting in this dayroom with friends as I'm trying to post to all of you lovely people, but that's easier said than done.) I was going to talk about speech and how hard it is going back to see my speechies and how much I miss them, but I think I'll save that for another time.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Love,

Katie

Sugar-Free January

Hello people of the internet world!

I hope your day is just as lovely as you! (Sorry, super cheesy, but I couldn't help myself. Remember, I'm a strong believer in building people up and giving them confidence. And that includes all of you!)

So this past month I decided that I was going to try to not eat sweets for an entire month. (Now, out of the list of things you should know about me (I have an unhealthy love of Pinterest, I adore reading and become too emotionally attached, I'm an introvert/extrovert, etc.), I have a HUGE sweet-tooth. It's bad.) I mean, I'd have some sweet stuff (French Toast with syrup at breakfast or oatmeal with brown sugar), but I avoided it for the most part.

(Okay, not gonna lie, there were a couple times that I cracked and I'd eat something sweet. (There's this incredible pumpkin bread that is one of my favorite things ever and it was just mocking me when I would walk past it, so I ate a piece one day and it was delightful. (So maybe it's not that incredible, but I love basically everything pumpkin and it's pretty dang good.)) But I was usually pretty good. Normally after really bad/stressful days, I usually eat my feelings (wow, that's really pathetic when you put it in writing...), but I had to find some other way to deal with bad days, so I'd drink water or something like that. It actually worked, too.)

When I would eat something sweet, I'd end up feeling really gross. Like, it was a weird sugar headache thing or whatever. But it was weird. And as the month went on, I craved sugar less and less...(Until I'd go on Pinterest and see all the dessert recipes and want one of the super yummy bars.) And now sweet things are really un-appetizing. (The ironic thing is that as I'm writing this, I'm making bars for some friends. However, I only had a bite or two of cookie dough and I turned away from it because I felt yucky.)

It's honestly really weird because I have a HUGE sweet tooth and can literally eat a bunch of desserts and not be fazed, but now thinking about eating a slice of chocolate cake makes me scrunch my nose up. (I read a blog a few months ago about a family who gave up sugar for a full year and I thought, Wow, that's crazy. I could never do that. But BOOM! I did it! (Okay, I did it for a month. But still!)

So that's my January. It's pretty dang exciting. I'm thinking of extending it longer than a month, too. You guys should try it. The first, like, 10 days SUCK because you really want something sweet (a hot chocolate or you go on Pinterest and see all the desserts you could make),  but then it gets better and you stop craving it.

Moral of the story: give up all sugar (or most of it), for 30 days. See what happens. Drink water and eat healthy foods. Trust me. You'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

Love,

Katie

Because I'm Katie

Hello lovely followers!

Happy Friday to all of you! You survived a very chilly week! (Maybe it wasn't chilly for all of you, but here in the midwest, it was cold, windy, snowy, and warnings of a white-out. So yay.) So I encourage all of to curl up on your couch with a good book (17 Second Miracle by Jason Wright is highly encouraged right now), sip a cup of hot chocolate, and cuddle with a blanket.

Anyway! So, as I was saying, because I'm Katie I do things a little, uh, differently. I'm gonna be honest here and admit that my brain works different. I handle things differently, I freak out over little things, and my brain literally never turns off. Therefore, I tend to handle situations differently. Especially social situations.

Usually, they're not too bad and we hit it off. Or they're really awkward and I totally screw up the possible friendship. (And sometimes those really awkward first encounters result in great stories for your friends to tell later about how you approached them and knew all about them because you're friends with them on Facebook. Not that that happened or anything.) Today was one of those days when I actually felt like I hit it off with a random stranger!

So long story short, I saw a girl at lunch sitting alone. She was in the  Air Force the first semester of class and just started class now. This entire week she had lunch the same time my friends and I ate, but she was always alone. Today I decided to go over and talk to her and just be a friendly face. We talked for over half an hour! She was super friendly and we had a really great conversation! She was telling me about her Air Force experience, her tattoos, her boyfriend, we talked about adjusting to school, football, dream career, and all that stuff! I walked away with a smile on my face and was really pleased with how well that went! (Of course I'm hoping that she was thinking the same thing, but she may just assume that I'm a crazy blonde that she should avoid from now on.)

Anyway, so that's what I wanted to tell all of you. I literally do my own thing that others wouldn't. Why? Because I'm Katie.

I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend!

Love,

Katie
