Goodbye 2014, Hello 2015

Hello friends!

I feel like I haven't posted in months, but it's actually only been a few weeks. (I hope you guys didn't miss me too much.) Anyway, I decided that I needed to post a stereotypical end of year reflection post.

So this year has been pretty dang eventful, if I do say so myself! (Although every years seems to get more and more eventful.) I concluded my final year of speech, built some lifelong relationships (and ended some others), started a blog, graduated from high school, read some incredible books (I'm a bookworm, what do you expect?), experienced some family issues, traveled, said goodbye to friends as we left for school, moved to a new state, started a new school (knowing absolutely no one!), made some wonderful new college friends, really pushed myself and grew as a person, and experienced so many new things.

I actually really enjoyed 2014 and am kind of sad to see it close, but I'm a little happy, too. This year either rocked or it was kind of a rough day, no in between. There are some days that I wish I could re-live and some days I wish I could forget. But it was good nonetheless!

I hope that all of you had a wonderful year as well. And because I'm me, I need to end this year with an inspirational quote. :)

Happy New Year!

Love,

Katie

Spontaneous Mini-Retreat

Hello lovely people!

I had one heck of a weekend, let me tell you. And the funny thing is, it wasn't supposed to be like it. I was supposed to hide out in the library for the entire weekend, studying my brains out for finals next week. But instead, this happened:

A friend and I were going to the building for dinner and as we were nearing the dining hall, two of my friends were walking out. They were going to leave for a mini-retreat to a reservation for a weekend and invited me to come with. (I had known about it for a while, but decided that I wouldn't be able to go because I had so much studying to do. ) I told them that I really needed to study, had a billion things to do, and had nothing packed! But they were SUPER PERSUASIVE. And every argument I made about why I couldn't go, but they had a counterargument right back. It was a very stressful 20 minutes as I debated whether or not to go. I asked friends, flipped a coin, asked a stranger, called my mom. (Guys, I'm seriously the worst with making decisions. I mean, I either make up my mind and refuse to back down or I'm crazy indecisive and need someone else to tell me what to do.) And finally I was like, "Okay! I'm going!" and I sprinted back to the dorms to pack. (Yes, my friends did think I was crazy for making this spontaneous decision.)

I ran into my room, threw a bunch of clothes into a bag, explained to my roomie where I was going, and jumped in a car to leave. So the joke of the trip was that I was kidnapped/peer pressured into coming on this retreat. (I went willingly. I promise.) And as we were driving, I couldn't believe that I actually decided to do this, but also how right it felt.

The drive was about 4 hours and it was kinda long, but it was really funny. There were only 3 of us on the trip, so we all just laughed and shared stories and talked. (I knew the other 2, but I wasn't super close with them. So the car ride really gave us a chance to get to know one another better.) The neat thing was that the other 2 are freshmen as well and it was good to be able to have a deep conversation and realize that we were all feeling the same things.

(This is so cliche to say, but it's true when they tell you that there are other people who are feeling/experiencing the exact same thing that you are. I thought that I was the only person to feel so alone at college sometimes and still struggle like I'm making friends, but they're in the exact same boat that I'm in.)

So we got to the reservation and were staying at the priest's home. She's loud, a little extreme, kind of in your face, and bias, but I really liked her. She's lived all over the world and has had some insane experiences! I mean, INSANE! She lived in Haiti, in Sudan, and so many other places! She knows what it's like to risk your life everyday and knows how sheltered we are. It was neat to hear about all of her experiences and how she was protesting against a bunch of injustices.

Now, I don't know what your belief is about Native Americans or reservations, but as someone who has little knowledge on the topic, it was eye opening. We learned a lot. Like, a lot a lot! Fortunately, one of the other kids had no previous knowledge on them either, so this was a new experience for him as well.

That night, the 3 of us stayed in this tiny little room talking and laughing and having a great time together before a day of work. We got up early Saturday morning and chopped wood for the elderly. My friends learned how to use a chainsaw, too! (No, I did not learn to use because I'd probably end up cutting my hand off or something because I'm Katie and that's how my life would go...)

We then went to this Christmas Giveaway which was located at one of the community buildings. We helped unload the truck of toys, clothes, and jackets with some other volunteers while the people showed up. There was this little boy who had to be about 9 years old who was wearing hand-me-down clothes that were 2 sizes too big and a Santa hat who was grinning as he helped carry boxes. I wish I could go back and take a picture of that because it's an image that just shows how great the need is there.

I was helping at the kids' table and helped kids get sized/find the right coat for them. It was really incredible to see the kids try on the new coat and get a new hat or a matching pair of mittens, too; and the smiles on their faces when they had their new winter gear was so hopeful and thankful. I liked having the chance to talk with some adults who were so kind to welcome us into their community. There was one gentleman I met who personally introduced me to his family. (I mentioned this to the priest later that afternoon and she said that they've been working on building better communication skills amongst the Native American people.)

I was talking with a boy who had to be about 15 and he mentioned that he was looking for a gift for his mother and we looked together find a nice present for her. I think the thing that stood out to me most was that even when these people have so little, they do look out for each other. This boy could've easily just looked for himself and then left, but he decided to take the time and find a gift for his mother.

Or this little girl was looking at these beautifully knitted hats and wasn't sure if she could have, so I sat on the floor with her and we tried on different hats until she found the right color she wanted. When she was happy with it, she smiled at went to show her parents. It was the little things like that really stood out to me and kinda made my heart melt.

So another really neat thing that happened when we were there was watching the community's reaction to the priest. She has this unspoken respect and love when she walks into the room. I saw so many kids come running up to her to show her their new glasses or tell her a funny story and she would hug them, kiss their forehead, and tell them how proud she was of them. Same with adults (minus the head kissing). But they would come and talk to her and she knew so much about them and their families. She'd ask questions about things they had talked about once previously or catch up on some news. That's the kind of role I want in the future. Her presence was incredible and it was amazing to see how it changed the community. I want to be like that in whatever career path I choose.

After the end of the Giveaway, we got ice cream and talked more. She was telling us so much and it was really neat to hear everything she had to say. She told us the importance of stories and how a story can change a person's idea about it. She also talked a lot about the injustices on the reservation and the rest of the world.

Now, I don't know how you feel about reservations and Native Americans, but I encourage you to leave those stereotypes or other ideas behind you and be open about it because here's the truth: you don't know the truth. Reading/hearing about what it's like to live on the reservation is WAY different than visiting it and seeing it first hand. I learned about so many of the injustices and oppression on both sides and how there are so many things that need to be done in order for this separation to dissolve. There are so many problems (on both sides), but we need to be hopeful and pro-active in order to get things done! And this means doing more than just hearing about the problems...You need to visit and see it with your own eyes and make your own decisions.

It was incredible to be a part of this (even for 24 hours)! It was really eye-opening and I honestly cannot believe that I was so close to missing out on an amazing thing! We're talking about going back in the spring and I cannot wait!

Love,

Katie

P.S. I had no idea that this post was so long! Oh man, sorry, friends! But here's a cute picture of the 3 of us!

College Reflection - 3 months

Hello friends!

Guess what? In less than 3 hours I'll be on the road heading back to good old Minnesota! I'm super excited! :) And as I've been getting ready to leave for Thanksgiving Break, I can't help but realize how much things have changed. How much I have changed.

I feel like I got a lot older, but that I'm still me. I'm maybe a tad more insecure (okay, or maybe a whole heck of a lot more), but I also feel really good. I have had some amazing days where I'm making some incredible memories...and then I have really bad days. My anxiety still kicks my butt, but most days I can handle it. I was tested in lots of ways these past 3 months, but it helped me in more ways.

College was not what I was expecting. Part of me desired for it be like a stereotypical college life you see on TV where you and your roomie become best friends, you have crazy professors, and figure out what you want to do with your life. But a bigger part of me wouldn't trade my college experience for anything. I have a really solid group of friends, a job on campus, and a great support system that's cheering me on at home (and of course all of my amazing followers who read this).

And when I tell people that I love it here: I really do. I'm so glad that I chose to come here rather than my other option. I don't think that I would have been as pushed or tested or have grown as much as I have here.

Anyway, I hope that all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. If you're traveling somewhere, safe travels. Or if you're going shopping Black Friday, I wish you the best. And make sure to eat some pumpkin pie for me!

Love,

Katie

If It'd Be Inconvenient, It'll Happen

Happy Sunday to all of you wonderful viewers!

I hope that you guys all had a wonderful weekend so far! Thankfully, it's not over yet! My weekend has been...inconvenient.

Yesterday I got up early to do some laundry. I only had about a dollar in quarters so I needed change. I threw in one load and went to the machine and put in $5. The machine took my money, thought for a few seconds, and then it said it was out of change! (Yes, I did call it lots of names in my head. No, I will not share them here.) So I texted my PA (peer adviser), called campus safety, and ran around my dorm looking for someone to help me. Eventually, one of the other PAs knew what to do so she helped me, but I wouldn't get my money back until Monday at the earliest.

Okay, not too bad, right? I still had a load in the wash and I didn't have enough quarters. I still had $1 in my wallet so I ran around campus going to all the other dorms trying to break my $1. I wast texting a bunch of my friends asking if I could have some money until someone said I could have their $1. Of course this whole ordeal lasted nearly an hour so that made me super unhappy.

The rest of the day wasn't too bad. I spent a majority of it writing a paper, but it needs to be done. Then right before dinner I was washing my hands and my phone slid into a sink full of water. (Okay, I openly admit that I did this to myself and that I'm an idiot.) The good news is  that I have a dumb phone, so it was super easy to turn off and take apart to dry.

I was kinda in a really bad mood the rest of the night, but some of my wonderful friends kinda coached me through it and didn't let me sulk. So that was my day. Hence the motto: if it'd be inconvenient, it'll happen.

Let's hope today's a better day. If any of you want to send me good vibes, that'd be greatly appreciated.

Love,

Katie

Feeling Meh

Hello people of the internet world!

I hope you all had a wonderful Halloween and ate so much candy that your teeth are rotting. (I personally love all things chocolate and Sour Patch Kids, so feel free to eat some of those for me.) :)

One of these days I'm gonna update this sucker and make it look legit, fancy, classy, and, well...less boring. Not sure how yet, but I will! And it's gonna rock. (It's on my priority list, but I have about a billion things to do, so that may not happen for a while...)

Even though it's only Wednesday, this week has already been meh. It feels really off, ya know? I can't place my finger on it, but something just isn't right...Maybe it's the stress of the amount of work I need to do. Or the looming upcoming tests. Or maybe it's the constant anxiety that I can't explain why. Heck, maybe it's PMS. I don't know.

There's just something that is making this week rough and I don't know. I'm getting really into my head, too. (Ya know, that voice that questions/over-analyzes EVERYTHING and makes you freak out over the smallest things. You basically feel worthless at the end of it and tell yourself that you're completely alone, you have no friends, you're gonna fail out of college, disappoint your parents, and end up being a sales associate making minimum wage for the rest of your life.) So maybe "rough" is the nice term of what I'm feeling.

I don't know what's wrong with me, guys. I feel like I fell into this slump of some sort and it sucks. Oh man, does this suck.

I don't really know what else to say right now. I don't want my negative attitude to make you guys bummed out. That's not fair to you. Ya need a bad week every once in a while, right?

Send me some good vibes, guys.

Love,

Katie

Comparison

Hello all of my favorite (internet) people!

I hope that your Saturday has been a great one and that you are enjoying this beautiful weekend! (Well, it's beautiful here. Hopefully it's just as beautiful wherever you are.) I do apologize for not updating for three weeks! I had no idea that I've abandoned all of you for a while. But I'm here now! :)

So, today I wanted to talk about something that I've been thinking a lot about lately: comparison. I mean, how often do we compare ourselves to others? Or we compare some of our possessions, grades, friends, appearances, etc. There are only two responses, too. The response when we feel that we're better off than the other person and we feel a little more confident, a little more proud, a little more arrogant. Or the response when we realize that the person we're comparing to is better off than we are and we develop a sick feeling in the pit of our stomachs.

But neither response really allows us to walk away feeling better, ya know? And if we do, it's only for a short time before the feeling comes back and we're back at square one. I was talking with a friend recently and she said something that really stuck out to me: "Comparison is the thief of joy."

(Now, if you don't know where this is going, then you probably need to go back and read a few previous posts...But if you do know where this is going, congrats! You're my new favorite person!) So, she's spot on because this takes away from our happiness. I'm serious! When you compare yourself to someone else, you're sacrificing your own happiness. AND you forget what you do have!

I'm guilty of doing this all the time, not gonna lie. I constantly compare myself to others and just end up feeling bad for myself. Which is totally not okay! And since I heard that comparison is a thief of joy, I've tried to stop myself from doing that. I need to remind myself that I'm extremely lucky to have what I do have and not to compare myself to others.

Anyway, what I'm trying to tell all of you is that comparing yourself to others, comparing your relationships, comparing your life to others isn't beneficial for you or your happiness. But glad with what you do have. And remember: comparison is the thief of joy.

Love,

Katie

Balance

Hello friends!

Who else is happy that it's the weekend?! I know I am! (Although, this week went by crazy quick and that makes me super happy!)

I hope that your weekend is off to a great start! Mine has already been quite eventful in the 20 or so hours since it started! It's a beautiful autumn day and I'm drinking a cup of hot apple cider. This is one of the  days when I'm happiest. :)

And although I have a billion things that need to be done, I thought that I should post about something that I constantly struggle with: balance. (A little ironic, right?) I'm so bad at trying to balance my life. (I was joking with a friend earlier today that I sometimes maybe sorta have my life together. (Okay, maybe that's not as funny as I thought...)) But even since I was younger I always struggled with trying to balance things. I've struggled balancing my time, my family, my commitment, my friends, my life! This has been a constant problem since I was, like, 8! (My dad used to tell me that all work and no fun makes Katie a dull girl.)

It's an issue. And I still struggle with it today! (Which is really sucky.) I try to make things all be even in my life and it never seems that way. I always find myself dedicating more time to a certain part/people of my life and then feeling guilty for not being able to do something else.

Even here at college I find myself trying to find a balance in my life between friends, homework, class, activities, sleep, and it just doesn't happen! I feel so bad when I have to turn down offers to hang out with friends or do something else because I've made prior commitments! It stresses me out and makes me feel like I somehow disappointed them and then I feel like I should devout more time to be with them and it turns into this huge, anxiety-filled mess.

(Jeez, sorry about the rant...I should've warned you that this would be a little rough.) But what I'm trying to say here is that I still struggle with balance in my life and I have no idea how to fix it. So, as you can tell, this is a challenge. However! I'll figure it out...I hope. It's still early in the year. I'm sure I'll get into a rhythm soon enough. :)

Have a great weekend!

Love,

Katie
